Kybee Island and Fort Pulaski

Before we leave Savannah we had to visit a southern fort.  We headed out to Kybee Island to see what was at the end of US 80...We found tourist and beaches and paid parking, so we turned around and headed back to Fort Pulaski.  We had passed this "junk" place that we just had to stop and check out on the way back to the fort.
I found a cool wind chime and we found a lot of "recycled" trash, turned into art.  Fun and interesting place.  After our junk stop we headed on to Fort Pulaski National Monument.  Built on Cockspur Island, it was started in 1829 and took 18 years to finish.  The Confederate States held Fort Pulaski on April 10, 1862.  Federal troops demanded they surrender and when they didn't the Federal guns opened fire on the fort, and by noon the second day there was wide gaps in the southeast angle of the fort wide enough for shells to pass through into the fort, threatening the main powder magazine...The Confederates surrendered the fort and Union troops held the fort for the remainder of the war.

We were lucky, today at 3pm, they were going to fire off 2 of the cannons and we stayed to watch...really cool.
