Devils Tower
"Bear Lodge" as the American Indians called it....or Devils Tower...the name given it by Colonel Richard Dodge in 1875. First thought to be the core of an ancient volcano, but recent data suggests it is instead an igneous intrusion...cooled magma. We enjoyed the visit today. We hiked the 1.3 miles around the base of the Tower...taking pictures all the way around. We saw 2 people climbing the tower..they were about 1/3 the way up. We are staying in Beulah, WY which is about 1 mile from the South Dakota state line. The next couple of days we will check out Spearfish and Deadwood, SD...Maybe even Sturgis too. The weather has turned cool the past week. We have had rain a couple times this week with more to come in the next few days...but that won't stop us from enjoying this beautiful area of the Black Hills.
